Reviews roundup – Grand Slam vs. Danny Bryant vs. Medusa vs. The Lizards

GRAND SLAM A New DawnGRAND SLAM
A New Dawn
AOR Heaven

At the beginning of the year, I said some nice things about Grand Slam – no relation to Grand Slam or Grand Slamm – when their “Waiting For Tomorrow” EP came out.  And here they are with a full-blown album to their name.  And it’s a good one.

They do the whole Scandi AOR meets eighties rawk with a hint of sleaze and glam metal very well indeed, as this is chock full of great riffs and catchy choruses.  Just the way it should be.  With Motley Crue having bowed out recently, there is room for a band with a use for a 200 foot rollercoaster, and given the right breaks and a couple of truly great songs, then Grand Slam could be it.

If you’re looking for an eighties styled rawk and roll party, then all you need to do is crank up ‘Light Up The Sky’ or ‘Don’t Leave’ and let Andy Sinner and the boys do the rest.

A new album from Danny Bryant has always been a treat, and I’m delighted to report that his latest is probably his best.  He’s reached that point in his career where he can call in the likes of Walter Trout & ex Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden, but he remains the star of his own show.

The title track kicks things off in fiery style with the now recovered Walter Trout joining in, while the boogiefied ‘Sugar Sweet’ is my early favourite on the album.  There’s a seventies guitar rock vibe to ‘Fools Way’, while he shows he can pull off a slow blues on ‘Slow Suicide’.

In the many years since I first saw him live, his vocals have improved beyond measure, and he really is the complete blues package these days.  Throw in Mr Marsden playing his legendary Les Paul, and I’m a happy man indeed.  Blues rock fans should kicking down the doors to buy this album.  He’s touring the UK in February, so make sure you check him out. Dates are down below the reviews.

Portugese prog time now, and it’s the debut EP from Medusa, who formed back in 2012.

Their’s is a doomy, gloom, dense prog sound, that will keep you awake at night, wondering what’s behind the curtain.  There are some heavy guitars that almost border on prog metal, but they pull themselves back on tunes like ‘Clandestinos’ before they scare everyone off completely.

It’s an assured introduction to the band, and here’s hoping there is more to come from them.

The first time I encountered The Lizards was when they released their rather enjoyable covers album “Archeology”.  But here they are with their first album of original material since 2006, and it’s one that features some great songs, alongside guest appearances from the likes of Frank Marino, Vinnie Moore and Glenn Hughes.

They’ve not altered the format, which is classic seventies hard rock, as befits a band who can say they were there when it happened.  They know how to rawk and they rawk hard on ‘Evil Eyes’, ‘Ton On The One’ and ‘Miracle Man’.  Everyone is on top form, with a special mention for ex Rainbow drummer Bobby Rondinelli, who remains one of the best in the business.  For an old rocker like me, this was manna.
